Free eSIM Trials Compared in 2026: Claim Them in This Order, Not All at Once
One-line summary: Claim the five no-credit-card eSIM trials in the right order — the one that never expires first, the one-day ones last — so you land with working data instead of an expired QR code.
What you need
- An unlocked, eSIM-capable phone (iPhone XS/XR or newer, Pixel 4 or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer; dial
*#06#— if you see an EID, your phone supports eSIM) - An email address; no credit card and no passport registration for these travel eSIMs
- Note: these are data-only plans. They give you no phone number, so they cannot receive bank SMS codes. Do not use them as a number-keeping SIM.
The comparison
| Trial | Data | Validity | Coverage | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eskimo | 500MB (current official figure; a March roundup said 250MB) | Data itself valid 2 years | 130+ countries | Enter code FREE500MB in the app |
| Nomad | 1GB | 3 days | 76–81 destinations | Auto-activates 15 days after claiming, even if unused |
| SimLocal | 500MB | 1 day | 99+ countries | Use it all on landing day |
| Roami | 100MB | 7 days | 200+ countries | Maps and messaging only — no video |
| Gohub | 300MB | 1 day | 12 Asian destinations | Asia trips only |
Figures combine a March 2026 Gohub roundup, an October 9, 2026 Roami review, and Eskimo's current official pages. Terms change often — trust what the app shows when you claim. Airalo's open free trial ended in 2025 and is not listed here.
Step 1: Claim Eskimo first — it does not expire
Eskimo's official pages say new users get 500MB of global data, no purchase and no credit card required, and the data stays in your account even if you do not yet own a compatible phone.

- Download the Eskimo app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign up with an email or a Gmail / Apple account.
- Enter FREE500MB in the referral field.
- Go to the DATA page, tap How to Install eSIM, and follow the guide. The app detects eSIM compatibility automatically.
- Do not turn on data roaming yet — wait until you land, then set Eskimo as your data SIM and switch roaming on.
Why first: it is the only trial you can claim months ahead without losing it.
Step 2: Claim Roami as your landing-day backup
Roami's trial is 100MB over 7 days across 200+ countries, no credit card, app required.

- Download the Roami app and create a new-user account.
- Claim the free trial eSIM and install it.
- On arrival, use it for maps and ride-hailing first to confirm local coverage, then decide whether to buy a paid plan.
- Use 100MB correctly: maps, email, messaging. Do not stream video, do not let the OS auto-update, do not sync your photo library.
Step 3: Claim Nomad, SimLocal and Gohub 1–2 days before departure
These expire fast, so work backwards from your flight:

- Nomad (1GB / 3 days): new users only. The trap is the 15-day auto-activation — claim it six weeks early and it expires before you fly. Claim 1–2 days before departure and switch it on on landing day.
- SimLocal (500MB / 1 day, 99+ countries): the most single-day data. Best for a heavy first day, then hotel Wi-Fi at night.
- Gohub (300MB / 1 day, 12 Asian destinations): only for Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore and similar Asia trips.
- GigSky (100MB / 7 days): a backup option. Its larger Visa-card tier (up to 5GB) needs an eligible Visa card; the base free tier is 100MB.
- Firsty: an ad-watch freemium tier. Keep it as a spare, not your main plan.
The order to remember: Eskimo first, Roami as backup, Nomad / SimLocal / Gohub timed to departure day.
Step 4: A 3-minute check after landing
- Settings → Cellular/Mobile → confirm the trial eSIM is installed and data roaming is on.
- Set the trial eSIM as your data line; keep your home SIM active for calls and texts (dual SIM).
- Open maps and confirm your location, then send one message — both working means you are really online.
- If it fails: toggle airplane mode once, check APN is set to automatic, check the eSIM's data switch is on. If it still fails, move to the next trial — most trial QR codes work only once, so do not keep reinstalling the same one at the airport.
Costs, limits and warnings
- Cost: all five base trials are $0 with no card on file. You only pay if you buy a paid plan afterwards, at the in-app price.
- No SMS codes: travel data eSIMs have no local number. For SMS verification, use a real local number or a separate number service instead.
- Free tiers shrink: Airalo ending its open trial in 2025 is the warning — install a trial soon after claiming it instead of hoarding QR codes.
- Not verified: SimLocal's and Gohub's exact in-app claim screens were not individually installed and tested for this article; only the roundup and official figures were checked. Nomad's destination count differs between roundups (76 vs 81); that does not change how to claim it.
