The Self-Statement Trap: Why Your Own Bank Statement Fails as Proof of Address
One-line takeaway: When a bank asks for proof of address, the instinct is to download a statement from the digital bank you already use — but Wise and Revolut both say, in their official lists, that their own statements do not count. Here is what actually passes.
What you need
- The institution that is asking you for proof of address — start from its own list, not from habit
- At least one document from an independent third party in your name and address (a bank statement, a utility bill, or a government letter)
- Acceptance of one counter-intuitive rule: the document that proves your address cannot come from the institution you are proving it to
Steps
Step 1: Read Wise's list first — its own statements, mobile bills, and PO boxes are all out

Wise's official guidance is blunt: PO box addresses are not accepted, nor are Wise statements, MoneyGram/Western Union/Revolut documents, or mobile phone bills. What usually passes: a utility bill (not a mobile bill), a tenancy agreement, a bank or card statement issued within the last 3 months, a tax bill or other government letter issued within the last 12 months, or a photo driving licence showing your address. The exact list varies by country, so use the list on the submission page you are given, not your memory of it.
Step 2: Then read Revolut's list — a Revolut statement cannot prove a Revolut address either

Revolut's US help centre says the same thing in reverse: Revolut account statements are not accepted. But it does accept other banks' statements — including online banks like Monzo and Starling, provided they show real transactions — plus credit card statements and other official bank correspondence. For housing documents it accepts utility, gas, landline, and broadband bills (not mobile bills) and leases signed by both landlord and tenant; for government documents, letters from government or recognised public authorities. The logic is consistent: the verifier wants an independent institution vouching for you, not the platform's own word about itself.
Step 3: Pass the format and freshness check — PDF, within 6 months, name and address matching

Take Revolut Germany's submission rules as the strict example: the file must be a PDF, or a photo of a physical document — screenshots are not accepted. It must have been issued within the last 6 months, be written in the Latin alphabet, and show a home address — PO boxes, hotels, and business addresses are out. The name on the document must match your account name, and the address must match the address on your account, or you must update your address first. Run those five checks — format, freshness, name, address, home address — before you upload, and submit two or three documents from different sources so the reviewer can pick the one it trusts most.
Costs, caveats, and pitfalls
- Cost: Downloading and submitting statements you already have is free. If your only documents are in another language and a certified translation is required, that is a separate cost (check the translator's quote; this article does not state a price).
- Trap 1: the self-statement trap. A Wise statement for Wise, or a Revolut statement for Revolut, will be rejected — that is the written rule, not a system bug.
- Trap 2: forwarding addresses and PO boxes. A parcel-forwarding address is for receiving packages, not for proving residence, and Wise explicitly rejects PO box addresses.
- Trap 3: expired documents and screenshots. Freshness windows (3 months or 6 months, depending on the institution) are strict, and screenshots are rejected under Revolut Germany's rules — submit a PDF or a photo of the paper original.
- Prepare more than one document: a bank statement plus a utility bill from different issuers beats a single document and a rejection letter.
- If your documents are not in English: a previous article in this series (23 October 2026) covered turning a local-language bill into an English proof of address, including Wise's four required elements and certified translation; follow that guide if you need it.
